The Navajo Nation sits on one of the richest energy corridors in the United States, and for close to a century, indigenous inhabitants of this region have been on the frontline on resource colonization to provide cheap energy and water. Since the almost a century, the Navajo land and people have been sacrificed for energy extraction for oil, gas, uranium, and coal poisoning the land, water, air and people. Despite being at the forefront of energy extraction, there are no benefits for the people in this region: Aproximately 1/4 of the Navajo population today live without electricity and running water on the Navajo Nation, while the economy functions at an unemployment rate of 60% and young people are leaving due to lack of opportunity. Now Navajan people are facing the onset fracking and a proposed pipeline transporting crude oil through the emergence place of people of Navajo- and this in the name of "economic development". In facing this crisis of their future, the idea of walking 1000 miles through environmentally threatened regions of native America in order to raise awareness was born.
The walk is a way to raise awareness for this enduring injustice and also a possibility to honor the legacy of their ancestors who were once forced to walk hundreds of miles during winter to be imprisoned for years in the name of American colonization. It is time to heal from the trauma of colonization that native American people have been living under for too long.
Support this courageous protest of young Navajans and help raising awareness for this important topic by sharing and liking.
